Do Chiropractors Help with Vertigo? Let’s Talk About It.

Vertigo affects nearly 40% of Americans at some point in their lives. It’s that awful spinning feeling — like the world is tilting and you can’t quite steady yourself. Some people feel it when they get out of bed. Others feel it just turning their head. I’ve even had a patient describe it as “being stuck on a tilt-a-whirl I never signed up for.”
So, can a chiropractor help with vertigo?
The short answer? Yes — often, we can. But let’s break it down a bit, and I’ll share what we see here at Elite Chiropractic & Wellness in New Braunfels.
What Causes Vertigo in the First Place?
Vertigo isn’t a disease. It’s a symptom. And it can come from a few different places. The most common type we see is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). Fancy term, I know — but all it means is the inner ear crystals (called otoconia) are out of place. That messes with your balance signals.
Other causes include:
Inner ear infections
Vestibular migraines
Neck misalignments or tight muscles (cervicogenic vertigo)
And here’s where we come in.
How Chiropractors Help With Vertigo
We’ve seen people walk through our doors frustrated, dizzy, and unsure where else to turn. One woman — let’s call her Lisa — had been struggling with spinning spells every morning for three months. Her doctor ruled out serious causes, but the dizziness wouldn’t stop. She’d tried medication. It made her sleepy but didn’t fix the problem.
When Lisa came in, we did a full evaluation, including checking her posture, range of motion, and a few tests to see how her eyes and ears were working together. What we found was key: a combination of inner ear imbalance and tension in her upper neck.
We used two main approaches with her:
The Epley Maneuver – This simple, hands-on head movement helps reposition those inner ear crystals that cause BPPV.
Gentle Chiropractic Adjustments – Especially in the upper cervical spine, where tension can disrupt balance signals to the brain.
Within just three visits, Lisa told us the spinning had slowed. By the end of the second week, it was completely gone.
Every case is different, but stories like Lisa’s are why we do what we do.
What You Can Expect at Our Clinic
At Elite Chiropractic & Wellness, we don’t believe in guessing. If you come to us with vertigo symptoms, we’ll:
Take a full history – To understand how it started and what makes it worse or better.
Run functional tests – To find out if it’s inner ear-related, neck-related, or something else.
Build a custom care plan – That might include specific adjustments, vestibular rehab exercises, and at-home tools to manage symptoms.
And no — we won’t crack your neck unless it’s absolutely needed and appropriate for your case.
Tips You Can Use at Home (Right Now)
While we always recommend getting checked in person, here are a few things you can try on your own:
Try the Epley Maneuver – If you’re comfortable, you can find guided versions online. But it’s best done with supervision first.
Stay hydrated & well nourished– Dehydration can mess with your inner ear, especially in Texas heat.
Avoid sudden head movements – Especially bending over or jerking your head side to side.
Track your symptoms – Write down when it happens, how long it lasts, and what you were doing. It helps us identify patterns.
